Henry VIII Details

Desperate for a son and heir, King Henry VIII risks both his realm and his immortal soul when he divorces Katherine of Aragon in favour of Anne “Bullen.” The last of Shakespeare’s histories, Henry VIII remains famous for more than just its subject matter—a mishap during the performance of the play resulted in the original Globe theatre burning to the ground.

Reviews

I purchased the Kindle edition of Henry VIII, but it is useless as a play text. The Prologue was incomplete, lacking the last fifteen or so lines. The text throughout was interrupted by the glosses and notes that, I'm sure, would be properly positioned at the bottom of the page in the print edition. It is impossible to read the play in the Kindle version. The editorial matter (apart from the notes and glosses which I cannot comment on as I did not persist in reading them) was thorough and clearly presented and included sections on the theater, Shakespeare's life, the authorship question, the texts of the plays and other helpful information. The introduction to the play by Jonathon Crewe clearly presented the historical context and addressed the co-authorship of the play by (it is thought) Shakespeare and John Fletcher. Except for the play text itself, then, the Pelican is a commendable edition. Buy the print edition.
